Bernard O’Donnell ’54

Brother Marcellus was an incredible teacher of chemistry and radio when my brother Ray ’50 and I attended The Mount. He helped Ray get a scholarship to Loyola College (at that time) and also encouraged him to pursue a doctorate in chemistry, which he eventually earned at Michigan State University in 1967. He went on to become a professor of chemistry at Oswego State University.

For me, the radio class led me to build both a receiver and transmitter for ham radio, earn my license, and pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship and an internship at the Westinghouse Defense Center. I earned a B.S. in Engineering from Johns Hopkins after six years of night classes, followed by an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from NYU while working at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ. I then returned to Westinghouse, where I spent the next 35 years of my career. I was especially grateful for the opportunity to develop airborne radar systems for the Air Force.
